Vacation with Yumi Kim

Stop the presses. I'm taking a vacation. I am headed to a tropical locale (although it's been feeling quite tropical here in Nashville!) for a week of fun in the sun and maybe some surfing? There's just something about warm sun and sand that makes me wanna buy cute sundresses. And you know who does some prints that are always perfect for every season? Yumi Kim. Maybe you've heard of her? Her prints are vintage-looking, sometimes slightly tropical and ALWAYS fun. I think we would be friends, Yumi and I.

Yumi consistently offers up a bevy of beautiful patterns, and you're sure to be able to identify with at least one. Right now on her site, she's offering free shipping through August and a sale on a lot of her summery prints. If you're headed on vacay like me or still enduring seemingly endless heat where you are, check her out!

On My Radar: Low Luv x Erin Wasson

One of my favorite models of all time is Erin Wasson. My first exposure to her was when she was starting as a Maybelline model about ten years back. I tried with much futility to replicate a very choppy bob she was rocking with some hot pink lipstick. Aaaah, that Wal Mart cardboard cut-out is forever etched in my brain.

After never quite being able to replicate the perfect messiness of that haircut, I resigned myself to the fact that I'd never quite look as cool as her. Her rock/bohemian hybrid style is so perfectly not put-together--the half-grown out roots, the baggy t-shirt with Chanel jacket...uuuuuuhhhh! It makes me just wanna quit and wear sweat pants. A girl can try though, huh? I can at least wear her new jewelry line. It's now in the US, and it is the coolest-of-cool: Low Luv x Erin Wasson. I. AM. OBSESSED. I want every piece (Matt Lehman, are you reading this?) Here are a few of my picks, but literally every one is bad-A. What do you guys think? Would you wear it?

Aztec finger ring, $38

Art Deco earrings, $53

The perfect cross pendant, $113

If you love Erin as much as I do, here's some extra-credit reading from the Vogue blog.

Amber and Ash--Part 3

Welcome to the third installment of the Amber & Ash Fashion | Home series! We are about to go totally over the top, so hold on to your chair! When Amber told me my next style icon was Rihanna, I got so excited! I chose to do a bedroom because it is just a fun place to really make her own. She travels a TON, so when she comes home, I’m sure she wants her bedroom to be a haven of Rihanna-ness! She would spare no expense (although since we are thrifty, I am giving you some cut corners!) I asked Amber for a few words to describe her style and she said “edgy, rock-n-roll, daring, outlandish, risk-taking.” So… here you go!

A. Benjamin Moore “Hot Lips” #2077-30 as the wall paint. Rihanna loves her some pink, just do a Google image search of her and you’ll see! Why not make her room super saturated hot PINK!”
B. Horchow Mirror Inlay Chandelier. ($2195) This mirror is totally glamorous. It could show up in a hotel lobby, a wine bar, or a super star’s bedroom. Why not?? Horchow is a wonderful site for finding mid-priced chandeliers, but if you are looking in a lower price range, check out this one at overstock!
C. Madeline Weinrib carpet on the floors. One thing that comes and goes through the decades is the idea of wall to wall carpet vs throw rugs on a hard floor. For Rihanna, I went with a wall to wall carpet. I am sure that she would replace it in a heartbeat if it started to look dingy. This metallic look carpet is fabulous. Wait until you see what we are going to do on the ceiling to mirror it!
D. Graham and Brown “Elizabeth” Wallpaper ($42/roll). To mirror the metallic carpet, we went with a metallic, super formal wallpaper on the ceiling. This is a takeoff of the old gilded ceilings of days gone by. Imagine waking up and looking at that fabulous chandelier mounted in the center of that gold damask print…. Luxury.
E. ZGallerie Hologram Bedding Set ($129). This bedding is sophisticated, graphic, a great price point while still maintaining a custom look. Sometimes it is tempting to go for a “wow” with your bedding, but in this room, there is plenty of “wow” so the bedding is all about being subtle. Rihanna constantly does that with her style. Everything is not over the top, and that is why it works.
F. Rococo Bed in Antique Gold ($780). This bed is ridiculous. Ridiculously awesome! Would I ever have this in my room? Probably not! Would a glamorous Hollywood super star that doesn’t hold back? Absolutely! This one is a reproduction, hence the price. You could find an original Rococo bed for thousands and thousands of dollars, so if that is you- then let me know and I will help you track one down!
G. Alora Diamond Coin Fabric by Kravet. This fabric is shown to make custom pillows for the bed. Maybe a big funky bolster? You can find this look at any local fabric store or online fabric store and find something similar for probably around $35/yard.
H. Dylan’s Candy ($11)! Dylan Lauren is Ralph Lauren’s daughter. She is the queen of candy! I think that Rihanna would love to have a few of these sweet things on her night stand!
I. Graham and Brown “Spirit” Canvas ($80). A beautiful “edgy” modern canvas adds some of that roughness that Rihanna exudes. This one has a great price too! I always encourage people to look for local artists, but this one is a great online source.
J. Caldrea Linen Spray in Sweet Pea ($12). I bought some Caldrea countertop spray several years ago and I cannot tell you how much I loved it! The smell is intoxicating! Linen Spray is something that gives that extra touch of luxury to your bedroom. Consider ordering this one, but by all means, get a beautiful little antique pink atomizer like this one to keep bedside!
K. ZGallerie Borghese 7-Drawer Chest ($999). I have always loved this chest. It is perfect for this room because of its simplicity to contrast the bed. This one is made of antique mirrored and silver finishes. I am not bothered by mixing gold and silver, and I’m pretty sure Rihanna is not either! J If you want to be thrifty, find any old dresser at a thrift store or garage sale and do a silver finish!
L. Graham and Brown “Woodstock” print by Barbara Hulanicki ($64). This is just precious. The black and white play off of the edginess found in some of these fashion pics. The print is just so cool. I may order one!
M. Rihanna’s Grammy. “nuff said.
N. Lucy Willow Oak Chaise Lounge ($1425). This is very traditional and luxurious. I can just see a pair of black leather combat boots OR something totally different like a pair of Christian Louboutins sitting by this piece. Of course, the boots would be paired with a dainty lace dress and the Louboutins with a studded leather skirt. Got to be unexpected!

That’s it!!! Thanks for reading and please leave your comments to let us know what you think! We love comments and 99% of them lately have been spam that we have to immediately delete, so don’t be shy :-). Hop on over to my blog to check out Amber’s outfit inspired by none other than Jennifer Aniston and a fabulous laid-back, earthy dining room! Xoxo-Ash

As Seen On AshInteriors.Net!--Room to Outfit 2

Tomorrow is our next room, but like I did last time, in case you missed it, here's the last installment of Amber & Ash found on ashinteriors.net!

As much as I loved the first room, the second room is much more my style. You'd be much more likely to find this room in my house over the more austere white room from the post below. Ash put it perfectly when she said this room was put-together but still a little rough around the edges. Everything coordinates, but it doesn't match perfectly, which I completely LOVE! I love all the different textures of the pillows, the couch, that rough, raw-looking wood coffee table...this is no cookie-cutter room. It looks like the person who owns this room has collected those pictures over time at flea markets and garage sales, and really cares that their room has character (and they're obviously very fun as they have board games under the coffee table!)

The celebrity who comes to mind is Rachel Bilson. She loves mixing vintage with higher end designer pieces and even those from places like the Gap; her outfits always have plenty of texture, with a slightly eclectic feel. She’s very petite, but with a cute figure that she loves highlighting with waist-accentuating dresses that look like they’re from an earlier era. In some of these pics she’s even wearing more tough shoes with lady-like dresses, kinda like that coffee table. My outfit today is one she might put on to do some shopping around LA…and coincidentally it’s one I would wear in a heartbeat.

A. Winter Kate Ginger Cardigan. $132. The first thing you notice when you look at this room are those screaming red pillows. So the stand-out part of this outfit has to be a fun red pattern. One of my new favorite lines is Winter Kate by Nicole Richie; she’s really gotten it right with this collection. I adore every piece. And while the prices aren’t Wal-Mart prices, they’re not outrageous either. This little cardigan is a nice weight for the summer and would be so completely adorable tied in a knot at the waist.

B. Madewell Bouquet Necklace. $85. I love this necklace. It adds a great touch of fun to this outfit, just like the personality of that couch and those pillows.

C. Essie “Pillow talk” Nail Polish. $6.39. You can’t beat an Essie nail polish for the perfect classy neutral.

D. Peridot and 14K Gold Hammered Band. Another understated piece of gold with the subtle green accent color of the pillows. And my birthstone, the little known peridot.

E. Mbenga Wooden Bangles. $16.99. The mish-mash of paintings and all the wood accents is this stack of bangles you will haphazardly pile on one arm or both.

F. Urban Renewal Cutoff Denim Shorts. $28. I know cutoff denim shorts aren’t for everyone, but just like Alexa Chung in Ash’s last post, you really can wear them with anything if you dare. Red works so great with denim, and I love how the light wash of these shorts really mimics the couch. These could be vintage shorts just like many of those paintings, and they’re destroyed, which goes with our rough-around-the-edges feel. Of course, substitute your own take on denim if cutoffs aren’t your thing.

G. LORAC TANtalizer Body Bronzer. $32. This is one of the must-have products of my lady clients. Before the red carpet, a layer of this adds a very believable bronze glow, and with those shorty-shorts, you may wanna add a little tan of your own.

H. House of Harlow 1960 Tribal Ring. $95. Remember when Don goes to California on ‘Mad Men’? That painting on the upper right might have been in the hotel lobby. And this ring in Nicole Richie’s jewelry collection, House of Harlow, is very reminiscent of that era and adds another piece of eclectic flair. Just like the owner has piled on the paintings, while ingeniously hiding the air vent I might add, we’re piling on the rings.

I. N.Y.L.A. Gwenda Clog. $119.95. That awesome coffee table and those dark wood floors bring a real earthy feel to this room and are a sharp contrast to the pretty pillows. These clogs do the same to this outfit. They add a certain heaviness that offsets the airiness of the floaty cardigan, also helping give that eclectic punch that you wouldn’t get from a predictable sandal or flip-flop. I’ve been loving clogs lately with shorts and dresses…funny, cuz they immediately transport me back to an awkward first date in 1994 when I put them on.

J. Natural Wood Layering Necklace. $34. Ash would know better than me, but is that some sort of wooden wall? I love it. Wallpaper, wood paneling? Who knows? Ash, please do tell! At any rate, who wouldn’t want a gorgeous blonde wood wall instead of boring old paint. Love Free People--so many great pieces. This necklace, in particular, layered with that standout Madewell piece make for an “I dug this out of a bin at the flea market” feel and the natural wood brings in the warmth of the wall to our outfit.

K. Thin Hammered 14k Gold Band. $78. Clearly this room’s owner went crazy with the pictures, but there are few “knick-knacks”, as my mom would call them. There are a couple gold trays on the coffee table, but not a lot of other stuff except for a few books. This ring is a subtle touch of shine, just like the tray. I love a thin gold band on a woman’s pinky. It’s so simple and elegant.

L. Alternative Apparel Runyon Racerback Tank. $35. Just like the beautiful simplicity of the beamed white ceiling is this absolutely perfect tank from my favorite tank-maker Alternative Apparel. (Made in the USA too!)

M. Bonnie Blue Bag. $270. I might put a purse in one of these outfits this summer that’s super-cheap, but I likely won’t. I love a nice, sturdy bag, and this one, like that coffee table, is functional, not showy and gets the job done.

N. Staring at Stars Short Brim Straw Floppy Hat. $28. Again, that wall brings in so much great texture and a hat always does too. How great is a hat, really? Not only are they super-cute with almost any outfit, they hide many a monstrosity of a bad hair day underneath, and people always think you put a little extra work into your outfit. (Psssst. We really didn’t. Our hair’s just super-dirty under here.)

Well, folks, we made it another week! I literally cannot wait for what Ash has up her sleeve for the next room! But, until then please check out my blog today for this week’s celeb, the always adorable Reese Witherspoon! Xoxo-Amber
